How to Install Datapacks on a Minecraft Server

· 1 min read

Upload the datapack's .zip to world/datapacks and restart the server. Datapacks work on Vanilla, Paper, Fabric and Forge alike, and players don't install anything.

Install

  1. Stop the server in the Crunchy.Host panel.
  2. In Files, open world/datapacks, and create datapacks if it's missing. On Paper, the Nether and End folders don't get their own datapacks. Everything goes in the main world.
  3. Upload the zip without extracting it: /home/container/world/datapacks/example-pack.zip.
  4. Start the server and run datapack list in the Console.

If the pack is listed as available but not enabled:

datapack enable "file/example-pack.zip"

To add a pack without a restart, run /reload on Vanilla and Fabric. On Paper, use /minecraft:reload, because plain /reload also reloads plugins and breaks things.

Load order

When two packs change the same recipe or loot table, the last one loaded wins. Set the order when enabling:

datapack enable "file/example-pack.zip" before "file/other-pack.zip"

first, last and after work the same way.

World generation packs

Terrain and structure packs only affect chunks generated after they're installed, which leaves visible seams in an existing world. Install them before creating the world, and before you pre-generate.

Not working

  • Not listed: the zip is in the server root instead of world/datapacks, or it's nested inside another folder.
  • Listed but does nothing: check the startup log. It's almost always a Minecraft version mismatch.
