How to Add a Resource Pack to Your Minecraft Server
Host the pack's .zip somewhere with a direct download link, then put the link and its SHA-1 hash in server.properties. The server doesn't serve the file itself. It only tells clients where to download it.
1. Check the zip
pack.mcmeta and assets must be at the root of the archive, not inside a folder. Zipping the parent folder is the usual mistake. The maximum size is 250 MiB, and every player downloads the pack on first join, so smaller is better.
2. Get a direct link
Pasting the link into a browser must start the download right away. Preview pages don't work.
- Your own web server or object storage: the most reliable option.
- GitHub: use the
raw.githubusercontent.comlink or a release asset, not thegithub.com/.../blob/...page. - Dropbox: change
dl=0at the end of the share link todl=1.
Avoid Google Drive, which shows a virus-scan page for large files, and Discord, whose attachment links expire.
3. Get the SHA-1 hash
The hash lets clients verify and cache the pack, so they don't download it on every join.
# Windows (PowerShell)
Get-FileHash server-pack.zip -Algorithm SHA1
# macOS / Linux
sha1sum server-pack.zip
The hash changes every time you replace the file. Update it with the pack, or players keep the old version or fail the download.
4. Set it in server.properties
Stop the server in the Crunchy.Host panel, open server.properties in Files, and set:
resource-pack=https://example.com/packs/server-pack.zip
resource-pack-sha1=0123456789abcdef0123456789abcdef01234567
require-resource-pack=false
resource-pack-prompt={"text":"This server uses a custom resource pack"}
With require-resource-pack=true, players who decline or fail the download are disconnected. If the link breaks, nobody can join, so test with false first.
If it doesn't work
- No prompt: the player's Server Resource Packs option for your server is set to Disabled, or the server wasn't restarted.
- Download fails: open the link in a private window. If you see a web page instead of a download, it isn't a direct link.
- Hash mismatch: hash the exact file that's online. To rule the hash out, clear
resource-pack-sha1and restart. - Pack loads but nothing changes: the files are nested in an extra folder, or the pack targets another Minecraft version.
