How to Fix "Connection Timed Out: getsockopt" in Minecraft
Your game sent a connection request and never got an answer. The address is wrong, the server is down, or a firewall on your PC is blocking Java.
Check the basics
- The server is running: its Console in the panel shows
Done. - The address matches the Network tab, including the port if it isn't 25565, like
203.0.113.10:25570. - Other players can join. If they can, the problem is on your machine or network.
- Your VPN is off.
"Connection refused" is a different error: the request arrived, but nothing is listening on that port. Check the port and that the server is up.
Allow Java through Windows Firewall
- Close Minecraft.
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall and click Change settings.
- Tick Private and Public for every Java(TM) Platform SE binary or OpenJDK Platform binary entry.
- If there's no Java entry, use Allow another app to add the
javaw.exeyour launcher uses.
Kaspersky, Norton, ESET and similar suites replace Windows Firewall. Add the Java exception there instead.
Still timing out
Try a phone hotspot. If that works, the block is in your router or network; schools and offices often block game ports. If you join through a domain, check its DNS records and run ipconfig /flushdns.
Otherwise, open a ticket with the address you use and the full error.
